I love this painting, it's a bit cheeky too. They might be some of the most lovingly painted urinals in history (Duchamp?) This series happened after I returned from Africa with a broken ankle - unable to get out and about like I used to, to make paintings of the landscape I started to realise I had always taken anonymous selfies in bathroom mirrors. For me the bathroom is a private and cocoon like space, I find when I shut the door and lock it I am instantly relaxed - happily alone in a quiet space. Yet part of the reason I started making these paintings was that on Instagram and Facebook people were (are) constantly using the bathroom mirror as a place to take revealing selfies and project them out in the world - the complete opposite of me shutting the world out. Which is where the titles come in, they were current news titles of the day, and a juxtaposition to the self referencing nature of the bathroom selfies.
